Dante said they could walk to where they were headed, so Emily kept pace with him as they marched away from the town centre. She was warm now that she was wearing his jumper, but she worried about whether it had left him chilly. He didn’t complain, though, so she decided it was fine.

The walk gave them time to talk. “Why do you spend time with Samaan if he scares you?”

“Safety. There are only a dozen brothers and sisters from my country in Boole. We stick together to protect one another.”

“From people like Harry?”

Dante looked at her and nodded. “We know we are not wanted here. Some of you make that very clear.”

“I’m sorry.”

He shrugged. “Do not be. There are kind people here too, and many countries would treat us worse. We are housed and fed and given an opportunity to work. You may find it hard to believe, but I love this country. It is my home.”

She smiled. “I’m glad you think so. Maybe one day things will be better.”

“I fear they will get worse, but that is a trouble for another day.”

“Yeah, I guess we should focus on Samaan. What’s his deal anyway? Why did he come to this country?”

“Samaan arrived here two years ago to escape the remnants of the war. At first, he sought to rediscover a righteous path and shed his past. All of us knew of his background, but we never spoke of it. It seemed he regretted it.”

“So what changed?”

“I don’t know. A darkness fell upon him a few weeks ago and he changed. He became quick to anger, lashing out at those around him. Knowing his past, none are brave enough to retaliate.”

“In case he curses them?”

“Yes. Most in Syria have forgotten the dark arts, but many still fear the wrath of those like Samaan. The Sect of Klanek has done many terrible things in its history.”

They crossed a dual carriageway and entered a housing estate on the other side. A dried-up stream ran through it and gave off an eggy stench. An abandoned shopping trolley lay on its side, tucked inside a small cement tunnel with a path going over it. Graffiti covered the side of a nearby house.

“Is this Benford Meadows?”

“Yes. You know this place?”

“Only by reputation.”

They walked in silence for a moment.

Emily broke the silence. “So… you expected to find me dead at the pier tonight? It was nearly true. The whole thing almost came down on top of us. In fact, I don’t really understand why it didn’t. Harry almost got impaled by a piece of steel, but it missed him by inches. Why? Why did it miss?”

“I don’t know. You must have protected yourself somehow.”

She stopped walking for a moment and looked at him. “How would I protect myself?”

“There are good forces as well as bad. Do you carry any charms or things that have brought you good luck in the past?”

“No, nothing like that. I mean, I’ve always been superstitious, but not so much that I would carry a rabbit’s foot or touch wood every time I…”

He frowned at her.
